Mary Jane cut from Spider-Man sequel

If you read my post on my thoughts for the Amazing Spider-Man 2, you know that, among other things, I wanted Gwen Stacy to die and for Mary Jane to be introduced. And that seemed to be going along well, until I saw this story saying that Mary Jane has been cut out of the film.

Now that's not necessarily derailing my plans, because, as I stated in the post, I was assuming a trilogy story. But Sony recently announced release dates for Spider-Man 3 and 4, so some shifting can be OK.

I still think Gwen Stacy has to die in this film. If you wait until the third film, there won't be enough development with Mary Jane. She will just be seen as "the next girl" rather than the girl he belongs with, that he marries. And if the producers cut out that Gwen dies, I will just be furious. So she needs to die, and it needs to be in this film. It can be near the end, instead of in the middle as I was thinking with a three-part series, but she needs to die. Which would make for an awesome emotional scene, and really push towards Amazing Spider-Man 3.

They might get away with not introducing Mary Jane or Black Cat in the second film and wait for the third. I would actually prefer that, because to do too much with them before Gwen dies would be to lessen the emotional connection between Peter and Gwen. So, start off the third film in one of two ways:

1. Spider-Man (not Peter Parker) begins a loose relationship with Black Cat. Throughout the film, he is remembering Gwen, and how she loved Peter Parker, not Spider-Man. Black Cat wants nothing to do with Parker, only Spider-Man, so he eventually ends the relationship. Near the end of the third film, he meets Mary Jane, and the fourth film is dedicated to her (in regards to love interest).

2. Spider-Man begins a relationship with Black Cat, while Peter Parker starts seeing Mary Jane. As each relationship develops, our hero has to decide between which girl is right for him, and which part of him is more important. Obviously, Mary Jane wins out, and they develop a little before the fourth film, which is all her.

Now, something else that needs to happen in Spider-Man 2 for this all to go as well as possible is that Gwen needs to die at the hands of a villain. Actually, that's not specific enough. Whatever way she dies, whatever situation she gets herself into, it needs to be because she knows Peter's secret. Now this wasn't in the comics, but I really think that it should happen in the films to cement in Peter's mind after Gwen's death that he cannot tell anybody who he is. Which would really create a solid platform for the Spider-Man-and-Peter-Parker-have-different-girlfriends angle. While he would love to be with either Mary Jane or Black Cat in bother personas (Peter and Spider-Man), he will be extremely hesitant to tell either one because of what happened to Gwen. Of course, by the end of 4, Mary Jane should find out somehow. Maybe she just finds out, he doesn't tell her.

So yeah. That's where I'm at with this.

Quicksilver

Wow. A week since my last post. I wish I could say I've been really busy, but honestly I've just been too lazy to search for topics to post about, because its been kinda slow on news lately, not a lot going on. That just changed.

Listen up, kids. This could get interesting.

Let's look at the timeline, shall we?

Last year, the Avengers hit theaters on May 2013, and changed superhero movies forever.

In April of 2013, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel, was asked about the characters of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Basically the confusion comes from the fact that Fox has film rights to X-Men and mutant properties, while Marvel Studios has film rights to Avengers characters, but Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch started in the comics as mutant villains to the X-Men (they are Magneto's children), but they reformed and became Avengers, where they have been for a long time. So they belong to both worlds. When asked about how they could be used in films, Feige had this to say:

“It’s a little complicated, but if they [Fox, which holds the X-Men rights] want to use them in the X-Men movie they could, [but] if we want to use them in The Avengers movie, we could.”

Back on January 28, I published this post on the Scarlet Witch and how she and her brother Quicksilver could be used as a way for Fox and Marvel Studios to tie their properties together without fully crossing over.

Fast forward to April 28, when I published this post about Joss Whedon suggesting that Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch were in his current script for Avengers 2. A few days later, this was confirmed. Joss' quote was this:

"I've got these two characters...two of my favorite characters from the comic books, a brother-sister act, they're in the movie, that's exciting..."

Now today, May 23, Bryan Singer, the director of the first two X-Men movies (see what epic plan he's doing here) tweeted this:

Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.

So we now have an actor officially cast as Quicksilver, but in the X-Men franchise. Will this interpretation be as a hero or a villain?

More importantly, will this tie in at all to the Quicksilver we may see in Avengers 2? Will it be the same character? The same actor? Or will the studios simply ignore each other, and each have their own actor in their own interpretation of the character? I think that's a bad move, I think that will confuse audiences.

The only other examples I can think of where the same fictional character was portrayed by two different actors at the same time are James Bond in 1983 (Roger Moore and Sean Connery) and Clark Kent/Superman in 2006 (Tom Welling and Brandon Routh) - although that was TV/Film, as opposed to two films. Still, Bryan Singer directed that film, and should have learned that it was a bad idea. I really hope that they put this actor in both franchises, or only use Peters in the "past" scenes as a young Quicksilver, and use another actor during the "present" in Avengers 2 as an older version of the character. Unfortunately, its been stated that both of the Maximoff's will be portrayed as younger characters in Avengers 2, so that won't work. So please, put this guy in both. Make it work well together!

Michael Rooker has been cast as Yondu, an alien Mystic. Until this point, it appeared the film would be taking material only from the 2008 team, but this character is from the original incarnation.

ANT-MAN: (November 6, 2015)
Recently Edgar Wright released a tweet saying that besides his own film, he has directed one scene in one other film coming out this summer, asking his followers to guess which. The prevailing theory is that he filmed a post-credits scene for Iron Man 3, so we may see Ant-Man make his debut pretty soon.

OK, so if you never watched "Heroes," it was this amazing show about super-powered individuals living in the real world. I recommend it (I think it's on Netflix), but be warned, the mythology is very complex and intricate, so it's a lot to keep track of. But I love it. I own the whole series, because I was stupid and didn't start watching until it cancelled after four season. But now, it may be coming back!

Some TASM2 updates

So, there's a lot of rumors going on about the upcoming Spider-Man sequel, about villains and supporting characters and whatnot. I posted this article a while ago about my thoughts on what I'd like to see happen. But getting some news from director Marc Webb's twitter account, I can confirm that, if nothing else, we will see the Ravencroft Institute -- basically a super-prison (think Arkham Asylum in Batman) -- which, while not exactly confirming, certainly suggests a plotline including a large number of villains. It also seems apparent that Oscorp will continue to play a large role in the film. I've also seen a little bit about a new costume, but don't have anything for you for sure now, sorry.

Cranes, Planes, and Automobiles

Assuming that most readers haven't read my disclaimer, I'll reiterate that this site is not meant to be news, or new information, so if you're reading this thinking "I already knew that!" don't yell at me for giving you old info. The idea here isn't to get new info, its to talk about the info we have.

So there's obviously a lot of talk about the possibilities of Spider-Man (the character and The Amazing Spider-Man as a film) joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The big missing link is that the Oscorp tower from TASM was intended to be included in the skyline in The Avengers, but wasn't finished digitally in time. There are arguments for both sides of the debate, but I want to talk a little about the evidence we have. The biggest question is "if Spider-Man was around for the Avengers, why didn't he help out in the Manhattan battle?" Which, let's face it, is a stupid question. People seem to forget that the time span of when the heroes discovered where the tesseract was, to the portal opening, to the whole fight ending with the aliens shorting out, didn't really take that much time. So by the time Parker would have heard the news, changed into his suit, and gotten there, it might have been over. The same concept applies to War Machine's absence, which Marvel actually explained in their tie-in comics.

However, a much more interesting theory has come up, and it warrants me re-watching both The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man. The idea is that TASM actually takes place AFTER the events of The Avengers. Which means a couple of things. Firstly, the reason Spider-Man didn't help out the Avengers could be simply that he didn't have powers yet. Another common question is if they co-exist, why didn't the Avengers help out with the Lizard? Again, consider the actual time span, the Lizard was never out in public for a super long time. But if TASM takes place after The Avengers, after Thor has returned to Asgard, Banner is probably hiding out again, and Stark is in some place that I won't tell because I know I have readers that don't want to know that spoiler yet (hi Derek!), basically the Avengers have gone Cosmic and Global (Cap joining SHIELD), so local, relatively minor threats in NYC don't really concern the "big guns" of the MCU anymore. Which leaves a niche that needs to be filled, as you can read about in an earlier blog post. And Spider-Man can help fill that void, and Marc Webb is setting up a huge Spider-Man universe that you can read about on other blogs and news sites, with multiple heroes, Oscorp and Osborn, possibly leading to a sinister six storyline. Which could be its own mini-verse inside the larger scale MCU.

Among other things, this could lead to Norman Osborn stealing the Iron Patrior armor (because in the comics Iron Patriot was worn by Osborn, and in Iron Man 3 it's worn by Rhodes/War Machine.

But there's another fun possible fact linking this concept to reality.

Anyone find it odd how many cranes there were in TASM near the end? I loved that scene, absolutely loved it, it was such a powerful and uplifting scene, but in the back of my mind, behind all the awe, I thought, is it normal to have that many cranes on one road?

So the point has been brought forward. What if TASM takes place after The Avengers? And what if all those cranes are there because they're rebuilding major parts of the city that were destroyed by the aliens? A fun idea, and it makes me want to rewatch both movies to see if there are any more possible hints of breadcrumbs for me to follow. If you can think of any, please comment on this post.

An extra fun thing here. In the old Spider-Man comics, he tried early on to join the Fantastic Four, but he had a bad public image, and a mask, and the FF couldn't trust him since they didn't have secret identities. This could translate well into the MCU. Originally in the comics, all of the Avengers had secret identities (except Cap) -- Iron Man, Giant Man and Wasp, Thor, later on Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch. These heroes all had secret identities from each other. But in the MCU, every identity is public. Stark announced himself to the world, Banner didn't really have much control over the government finding out who he is, Hawkeye and Black Widow are just agents whose identities are known to everyone who matters, everybody knows who Cap is, and Thor has no "secret" human identity, he's just the prince of Asgard (although photos of the new Thor movie suggest he'll become King). So without any secret identities, the same issue could arise for Spider-Man as the FF in the comics.

So many thoughts! So many ideas! I hope to get so many comments! Get started!

Thoughts on The Amazing Spider-Man Sequel

The Amazing Spider-Man was a good film, even a good superhero film, but to me, not a good ADAPTATION of the character. If the second film wants to impress me more than the first, it's going to need to do a couple things.

1) Gwen Stacy must die. Without assurance that this series will last past a third film, Gwen Stacy needs to die in order to give Peter a long enough time to grieve, and meet Mary Jane and start dating her by the end of the third film. Something else fun to throw in here would be the Black Cat, partly because after 4 Spider-Man movies she's never been in one and she deserves to be, and partly because of the fun to be had with Peter's girlfriend vs. Spider-Man's girlfriend, but as the first film showed that Gwen knows, that can't happen until she dies. Black Cat could be a great way to get him past that relationship, eventually leading to Mary Jane.
2) The Daily Bugle (and J. Jonah Jameson). I'm sure part of the reason this was left out was because nobody wants to recast J. K. Simmons, who was so perfect for that role. But the character needs to be there. If you can't find an actor, just hire Stan Lee.
3) A better villain. And by this I mean a better adaptation of a villain. Lizard was a decent enough villain for TASM, nothing great, but served the purpose of a villain. The problem (for me) is that he was NOTHING like the Lizard from the comics, at all. Spider-Man has great villains in the comics, and those need to be utilized. This brings me back to Black Cat. Besides her potential as a hero, she could have even greater purpose exploring the anti-hero role, and show the tension of Spider-Man teaming up with her when needed, even though he knows he can't really trust her, because she's a villain too. Lots of fun.
4) Figure out what you want to do with Norman Osborn. I think this was the biggest annoyance to me from the first film. Either use the character, or don't, but don't reference him a ridiculous amount if he's not going to be important. It put limitations on the Lizard that didn't need to be there, and wasn't necessary for the story. Go big or go home. I suggest going big, and give us a great goblin.
5) Mary Jane. She doesn't have to be a big deal yet, she just has to exist in the film.
6) Aunt May's failing health. They went a drastically different direction in TASM than in the original trilogy, and I think it worked OK, but Aunt May's health is a part of Spider-Man, simple as that. And that needs to be brought in here, even if just a little, and really be put to the test in part 3, maybe even killing her at the end.
