MCU Abbreviated Cut - Phase One

The Challenge:

Create an "abbreviated" cut of the Marvel Cinematic universe, keeping all the best moments but watchable in a single sitting - or at least a weekend. Cut up chronology any way you like, but limit the time to 3 hours for each Phase and/or year of television.

My main process for shaving down the runtime is to cut a lot of villain "buildup" moments because, let's face it, it usually doesn't go anywhere, because most of the villains in the MCU are one-and-done. Following that, cutting any abandoned plot point that doesn't go anywhere saves a lot of time (Iron Man 2 has a lot of those because of the lack of continuation into Iron Man 3). Finally, any extensive buildup for characters or drawn out foreshadowing can be left out, because for this cut, we can assume it's fans watching, not a GA who doesn't know who characters are.

So here we go, draft one of my Phase 1 cut - let me know how you would do it!

Captain America: The First Avenger
I'm going to cut out a lot of "skinny Steve" moments because we know he becomes Captain America, so a lot of that is, for this cut, a waste of time. But I want to keep in a little so that we see that Cap spirit even without the body.

I would open in the theater scene, with Cap telling the bully to show respect. Include the alley fight and Bucky's entrance. Then cut all the way to the Stark Expo where Steve decides to enlist again. We don't need to hear about all the other times, just starting here will do. Include the talk with Bucky while Erskine overhears, and Erskine's offer to Steve. From there, we go to boot camp where we only spend a fraction of the time. Again, we know he's going to do it. But we include the introduction of Col. Philips and, more importantly, Peggy Carter. Cut out a lot of the "Steve's a weakling" shots, but include Philips talking to Erskine and my personal favorite moment of the film, the dummy grenade. Keeping the flagpole gag in too will help build the relationship with Peggy and the fact that Steve thinks differently than other men.

Pretty soon I would cut to the operation because, again, we know that's where it's going. So we have the operation, the death of Erskine, and the Heinz Kruger chase and fight. Show Skull with Zola containing the cube, but we don't need to see Skull obtaining it. Cut out the "chorus girl" subplot and go straight to Rogers rescuing the POWs. Maybe a brief snippet of the stage days to explain the costume, but we don't need to see a lot of that. After rescuing the soldiers, show Stark equipping Rogers for future combat, and the Howling Commandos montage, going right into the death of Bucky and the final assault on the Skull and the plane crash. No ending scene in modern times yet

Most of the cuts are from the first two-thirds of the film.

Agent Carter
From the series, show some footage (very trimly cut) of her working with the Howling Commandos, discovering the Red Room, rescuing Fenhoff, fighting Dottie, Fenhoff killing Dooley, and being put in prison with Zola.

The series is actually pretty self-contained, so we don't need a lot of it. More Howard Stark would be nice and certainly some of Jarvis, but the series shouldn't contribute too much to this cut. The short, however, would be nice to include, because that's already very trim, and aside from character points shows as much as clips from the show would.

Ant-Man
As a bonus, we could include the Pym-Carter-Stark exchange from Ant-Man's opening, and the scene of Ant-Man and Wasp in action.

Iron Man
Open with the opening shot of the convoy, but when it explodes, skip the whole casino scene. Cut right to the cave, waking up and speaking with Yinsen, and the "deal" made with Raza's second-in-command. I would cut out most stuff with Raza himself, because he's not actually that important. Skip right to Stark explaining the plan to Yinsen and them starting the breakout. Keep the Yinsen death speech of course and then Stark getting the Hell out of Dodge.

Back in the US, skip the press conference and Stane buildup, and testing of individual suit components (maybe keep a little for the comedy) and focus right on the test flight, and Mark III design. Keep the Stane reveal at the party, the scene with Pepper after Tony's first mission (Are those bullet holes?) and the Iron Monger reveal with Coulson and Pepper, leading to the final fight. No stinger yet.

The Incredible Hulk
The opening montage is gold - keep that in. Cut the subplot with Mr. Blue until it actually becomes important, but show Banner's homemade lab. Show the blood spill in the factory (Stan's first cameo in this cut) immediately followed by the attack by Ross et al. Cut to Betty finding Bruce at Stan's and meeting Sterns, along with Blonsky becoming abomination. Forget most of the helicopter shots and cut right to the Harlem fight. No Stark cameo yet.

Iron Man 2
Cut the opening Stark Expo nonsense. Cut the entire palladium poisoning and not-"demon in a bottle" subplot, and the new element, because none of those plot points are continued in Iron Man 3 (thanks, Shane). Even the Howard Stark subplot can go. Stark's first scene should be in the ring with Happy, introducing Romanoff and showing Pepper becoming CEO. Forget Whiplash's first fight - forget everything at the Grand Prix. Again, this is all about the Howard Stark subplot that Shane Black completely ignored, so it can go. Whiplash's first moment should be Justin Hammer breaking him out of prison, and him and Hammer meeting should be Hammer's first appearance.

Cut Stark meet with Fury at the donut shop and save the "Rushman" as Black Widow reveal for her scene with Happy. Show an argument between Rhodes and Stark ("they're gonna take your suits!") but skip the party. Just show Rhodes taking the suit and getting it weaponized. Cut to Hammer taking the stage at the Stark Expo (we don't need to see Vanko working on the drones much), and the whole fight between the Hammer Drones, Crimson Dynamo, Iron Man, and War Machine, and of course keep Black Widow's best scene in the movie, with Happy in the background.

Finally we get to

The Stingers
First show the scene with Fury in Stark's house. I know this isn't technically correct chronology but it fits nicer. Then show the donut shop scene from Iron Man 2, cut to avoid plot points from that film (poisoning), but revealing Romanoff as Black Widow to Tony. Include the "Southwest Region" line from Fury to lead into A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer, and finally show The Consultant complete with the ending scene from The Incredible Hulk.

Thor
Cut out a lot of crap with Foster, Selvig, and especially Darcy. Focus on Thor.
Show the flashback of the battle against Jotunheim, but cut the coronation scene before the weapons vault. We need the weapons vault fight to lead to Thor leaving with Loki, Sif, and the Warrior's Three. Most of the battle on Jotunheim can stay, including Odin's interference and the subsequent banishment of Thor.

Cut to the "Excalibur" scene and the talk at the diner (we don't need to see Thor get hit, tazed, injected, and hit again), where Thor learns Mjolnir's whereabouts. Skip Jane's back-and-forth and cut to her driving Thor there (sorry, no "I need a horse!). Thor breaks in, keep Coulson, Hawkeye, and Selvig. After he fails, skip the interrogation, skip Loki's scene, cut to Selvig getting him out. From there, cut right to the Warrior's Three arrival (don't need to see Thor and Selvig act like fratboys), the arrival of the Destroyer, and the battle between the five of them. Thor returns to Asgard (cut out as much Jane as possible) and destroys the Bifrost. Then cut straight to the cube (no Heimdall, we don't need to see Jane and Darcy again), being shown to Selvig, and Loki's influence.

The Avengers
Cut out a lot of buildup. We've had five movies, four shorts, and a TV show of buildup. Cut all that filler. Show Loki attacking project PEGASUS to introduce Hill and show Hawkeye being taken. After that, show the scene from Captain America: The First Avenger where Cap wakes up and Fury makes contact. Then cut to Germany, where Cap and Widow attack Loki, and Stark comes in (Cap meets Stark). Keep some of the forest fight, but not too much because we know they aren't going to be enemies. At this point (not the same time as the film), have Coulson call Widow to recruit Banner. Show Fury imprisoning Loki, and Loki's speech to Widow. Keep some of the "Phase 2" banter but not much. Jump quickly to Loki escaping, Coulson dying, and almost immediately to them heading the Manhattan. Keep most of the fight, Thanos, and Shawarma.

Agents of SHIELD
Item 47 doesn't lead anywhere, because we haven't seen those again. If you include it, trim it. The more important coda to Phase 1 is the Pilot of Agents of SHIELD, showing Coulson back from the dead and the beginning of his adventure.

Can that all fit into 3 hours? I have no idea, and I probably won't find out anytime soon. But what do you think of this cut? Was there anything you think should be left out? Anything you thought I should have included? Let me know what you think!

14 Questions and Observations (and Responses) from the Thor: The Dark World Trailer

Immediately after the release of the trailer for Thor: The Dark World, this article showed up with 14 Questions and Observations about the trailer. It's a pretty fun read, so go check it out, then come back here for my responses, and perhaps some more questions.

1. Is Thor leaner?
Response: Not sure how important this actually is, but I don't see a huge difference. Hemsworth is likely wearing a different costume, combined with another change of hair length, and I'm sure that he isn't the same exact dimensions as he was during Thor or Avengers. Remember, he actually go so big for Thor that he didn't fit into his costume, and had to get smaller again. Maybe they were just trying to avoid that. I don't know, take a look for yourself. Personally, I think its the armor. Also, we saw his huge arms a lot in Thor, something the armor covers up.

2. Jane Foster wishes she wasn't wearing flannel in Asgard.
Response: Uh, hi, this is Jane Foster, girl who has been studying stars and wormholes forever trying to understand something nobody else has come close to before. You really think that when she finally sees it and gets there, she's gonna be concerned about her wardrobe? If a scientist cured cancer in PJs, would he feel less successful that if he had done it in a lab coat? No. Obviously she'd dress up in the public eye when announcing it, if she ever gets that far, but I'm pretty sure she's more concerned with other things now. Plus, its Asgard. Pretty much anything Jane Foster would own would pale in comparison to the formal dress of the Asgardians. So, stupid point. Thanks for nothing.

3. Where's Captain Britain?
Response: OK, whining about heroes you wish were in movies, thought should be in movies, or makes sense that they should be in movies, is nothing new. Go whine somewhere else. Irrelevant, moving on.

4. No more Darcy?
Response: It's already been confirmed that Kat Denning's role in this film would be expanded from just that of a comic relief, so whoever wrote this must not be as informed as they think. Or they were just really stretching for 14 points. At any rate, Darcy was a pretty pointless character in the first film (in fact, Jane Foster was a pretty pointless character in the first film, so Darcy was just a pointless sidekick to a pointless character), so I would have actually been fine with lessening her role to focus more on characters like the Warriors Three, Sif, Heimdall, Loki, Odin, Frigga, and new characters like Tyr, Malekith, Kurse, etc., rather than focusing more on some chick who's main contribution to the movie is her chest. Nothing against Kat Dennings, but her character is not essential here.

5. Bifrost was unimportant.
Response: Again, whoever wrote this is either misinformed or uninformed. Yes, the Bifrost was destroyed. Yes, that was the primary method in and out of other realms. But Loki clearly stated that there were other ways to get around besides the Bifrost, and said so in such a way that suggested that not many Asgardians know about, maybe not even Thor at that time. In The Avengers, Loki mentions the Dark Energy that Odin must have used to get Thor back to Earth. Cheap trick? Maybe, but it works as a plot device, and we can understand that while Odin was willing to use Dark Energy to retrieve his son and save Midgard, he would e less willing to use more Dark Energy to send Thor back so he can reunited with his human girlfriend that Odin disapproves of. So, not really that unbelievable.

6. Asgard is more Tolkien.
Response: First of all, if you think mountains and oceans are "Tolkien" then you're just too stupid to properly argue with. Tolkien didn't invent that scenery, and every movie that uses similar themes isn't "Tolkien" just because of that. Secondly, if you think that all of the palaces and grand rooms and "royal" parts of Asgard that we saw in the first film was the entirety of the realm, you're ignorant. They showed us the relevant parts of the world, to set the stage for how awe-inspiring these gods are. But this film is focusing on the darker aspects of the nine realms, and what the trailer is showing us could either be darker aspects of Asgard (something Joss Whedon chose to include during Loki's interaction with Black Widow) or part of Svartalfeim, the home of the Dark Elves, for whom this movie is named. Trying to take away too much from the trailers is a common mistake, try not to focus on it too much.

7. Jane Foster is impressed.
Response: Again, this is obvious and stupid and irrelevant and unnecessary to say. She's only been studying this stuff for years and years, how would you expect her to react?

8. Lady Sif is not amused.
Response: While this seems like another obvious and pointless remark, this could actually have a lot of potential behind it. Jaimie Alexander reported in an interview that the sequel would dive in a bit more to the relationship between Sif and Thor, who are in love in the comics. Remember in the comics, Jane Foster was the love interest for Donald Blake, who was omitted for the MCU, and Sif was the girl for Thor, so to satisfy both, there was a bit of merging the two entities. Will we see something like that in the MCU? I don't know, but you can read more about my thoughts for Sif here. 

9. Odin's back.
Response: Duh. He's the Allfather. King of Asgard. Thor's dad. Can't likely have a Thor movie without him. Unless, of course, he dies in this film, like the photos being released suggest, then in the sequel he could be in the clear. Unless some flashback or Mufasa cloud talking occur.

10. Jane Foster possessed?
Response: I love Natalie Portman. I can't really figure out why, but ever since seeing her in V for Vendetta I just have a ton of respect for her, despite not seeing her in much else. Black Swan was another great film for her. But she was pointless in Thor, and she didn't really impress me. She took the role only as a favor to the director, and didn't have any connection to the character, and it showed. Furthermore, the character was completely different from the comics version, now an astrophysicist instead of a nurse. Seriously, one of my few complaints with Marvel Studios is that they just turn any non-superpowered female role into a "scientist," and it makes me worried for Janet Van Dyne/Wasp. Anyways, when the potential new director for the sequel didn't get the job and they hired Alan Taylor instead, Natalie Portman threw a fit. It would appear that she is being punished by being given a lame role (again) and being possessed. Which is really an immature reason for doing something so drastic to a character, but I can't stop them.

11. Thor loves a good battle.
Response: Yeah, he's a warrior. Seriously, too many overly obvious "observations" in this article.

12. Is this Malekith?
Response: Of course it is! Who else would it be? It's not Loki!

13. Things do not look good for Jane Foster.
Response: Too similar to number 10.

14. Loki
Response, Part 1: Oh, you noticed his hair got longer? Good for you, so did everybody else. You're asking how often hair changes in Marvel films? Let's see. Fury is bald, so no change. Cap was frozen, so no change. Black Widow went have having beautiful long curly locks in Iron Man 2 to whatever you want to call the 'do she sported in Avengers, big change. Banner was completely recast (as was Rhodes), so I think we can at least consider both of those changed. Stark has stayed fairly consistent, but that's because he has an image to uphold, so no major change. Thor's hair was ridiculously different between Thor and Avengers, major change. Hawkeye had all but no role before Avengers, so not much opportunity for change.

Also, consider the characters progress. Deceiving his family to steal the throne, being sucked into a wormhole, dealing with Thanos/The Other/The Chitauri/whoever else he was working on, then being imprisoned. I doubt he's had much thought for his hair throughout all of that.

Furthermore, is this important? No. But it could be entertaining as another Rambo-esque fact. (In the Ramboo films, Sly Stallone's hair got longer in each film, and the knife he used got larger. Makes me want to look at Loki's weaponry throughout the films).

Response, Part 2: I think the first Thor film showed us very clearly that Loki, as the freaking god of Mischief, knows some things about being sneaky and shadowy that nobody else, including possibly Odin and The Dark Elves know about. So, while there may be a few different ways in and our of the worlds, if Thor needs a way to get to Svartalfheim discreetly, without any of the Dark Elves knowing, then Loki is obviously the best chance he has at doing that. So yeah, Loki should rot in jail, but Thor needs him. And Loki wants any possible chance of escaping/redemption he can get, so of course he'll agree. Stop acting like you're smart by pointing out plotholes that don't exist in a movie you haven't seen yet. It's called good storytelling. Just enjoy it.

Well,

Now that I've got that out of the way, time for a few questions of my own.

1. Why is this truck floating? As far as I know, none of our Asgardian friends from the original film has Telekinesis as part of their superpower repertoire, so who is causing this?

I admit I'm pretty unfamiliar with Malekith, so let's see what wikipedia says about him:

Malekith has all the normal attributes of a member of the race of dark elves, although his abilities are as a result of above-average development. He possesses superhuman intellect, strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes.

As a dark elf, Malekith also has the ability to manipulate the forces of magic for a variety of effects, including teleportation, energy projection, physical malleability, flight (by transforming into mist), illusion casting, and the ability to change the shape and appearance of other beings or objects.

Malekith has a vulnerability to iron, which disrupts or cancels his magical spells.

So that's a definite maybe

2. Who is this guy?
The trailer shows a man we've never seen before doing some sort of science-y work with Darcy, but who is he? My excitement shouts out all the possibilities, most notably Hank Pym (referenced but not named in the first Thor film) but my brain tells me that's probably not the case. So who is he? Is the actor Chris O'Dowd, who's confirmed to be in the movie in an unspecified role?

3. Who is this girl?

Based on costume and accessories, I'd say this is the character of Lady Sif. But it looks nothing like Jaimie Alexander, the actress who portrays the character. So who is this? Am I wrong, and it's just a weird combination of lighting/angle/effects that makes it look like someone else? Is it another character (doesn't quite look like Valkyrie)? Is it (geeking here) a post-merge version of Sif and Jane Foster in one entity? The rest of the internet seems to think it's Jaimie Alexander, but it just doesn't look like the same girl to me.

4. What is going on here? 

Where is this battle taking place? Midgard? Asgard? Svartalfheim? Somewhere else? Who has that kind of technology? The Dark Elves? Friends of Loki? Who are they shooting at? I have no real guesses here.

Michael Rooker has been cast as Yondu, an alien Mystic. Until this point, it appeared the film would be taking material only from the 2008 team, but this character is from the original incarnation.

Recently Edgar Wright released a tweet saying that besides his own film, he has directed one scene in one other film coming out this summer, asking his followers to guess which. The prevailing theory is that he filmed a post-credits scene for Iron Man 3, so we may see Ant-Man make his debut pretty soon.

HEROES: (TBA)

OK, so if you never watched "Heroes," it was this amazing show about super-powered individuals living in the real world. I recommend it (I think it's on Netflix), but be warned, the mythology is very complex and intricate, so it's a lot to keep track of. But I love it. I own the whole series, because I was stupid and didn't start watching until it cancelled after four season. But now, it may be coming back!

A quick summary of MCU comics, part 2/9 [Thor]

For part 2, I admit I made it easy on myself on purpose because I knew I wouldn't have a lot of time to post today. The Thor comics are simply a comic version of the film. No new info, no fun secrets, just the same story in comic form. Now you know.

Photos, photos, photos (Phase 2 concept art/preview)

So, I have a lot of photos that have come out in the last couple days.

At least some of them were released as part of the huge Avengers Phase 1 box set as part of the "Phase 2 Preview," but since I don't have that I'm not totally sure if they all are or not. Basically a lot of concept art drawings for upcoming films. Some of them I'm not even certain what films they are supposed to be attached to, so some won't have any helpful descriptions, sorry.

Keep in mind that concept art is no guarantee of how something will look in the final film, just used as, well, a concept.

The little spherical thing reminds me of Iron Man 2, but I'm pretty clueless about this.
